Workshops
Again, this semester the
Graduate Teaching Consultants will present a series of workshops on
a variety of teaching issues and concerns. All TA's, regardless of
level of experience, are encouraged to come and participate in practical,
hands-on workshops on improving teaching skills. Topics range from
evaluating written work, to building rapport with students, to using
the web as a tool for instruction. See the CTL
Calendar of Events for specific GTC programs (noted by an asterix).
Round Table Discussions
The graduate teaching consultants
will also provide a series of round table discussions, a format which
will allow a group of panelists to offer their thoughts on an issue
followed by a general discussion. The roundtable will provide a forum
for listening to experts and interested parties presenting their ideas
as well as for airing concerns and questions. Topics will include
issues of concern to female TAs in the classroom, and working effectively
with student athletes.
Video Critique Sessions
Video critique sessions
give you the opportunity to share a self-selected video clip of your
teaching either with a graduate teaching consultant, or in a group
of your fellow TAs facilitated by a consultant. Videotapes offer you
the chance to view and reflect on your teaching as well as providing
a basis for in-depth discussions of teaching issues and strategies
for improvement. For an appointment to have your class taped by CTL,
call 966-1289.
Microteaching Sessions
Microteaching sessions
offer graduate students a chance to present a 10-minute "mini-lesson"
either to a graduate teaching consultant or in a group of TA presenters
facilitated by the consultants. These sessions can provide a chance
to see other graduate students' teaching strategies, to offer and
receive suggestions and positive feedback, and to improve teaching
skills. Microteaching sessions are also recommended for those who
are not yet teaching but who would benefit by this kind of teaching
experience.
In-Class Visits
The graduate teaching consultants
will also be available for in-class visits and post-visit consultations.
Like micro-teaching and videotape critiques, the in-class visit will
provide an opportunity for TAs to get feedback on their teaching and
to refine teaching skills. The in-class visit gives the instructor
the benefit of suggestions from an outside observer who has had the
chance to see an entire class and see the classroom dynamics firsthand.
Lunchtime Discussions
This semester, the Graduate
Teaching Consultants will provide several opportunities to meet with
TAs of various disciplines and discuss successes and concerns. The
informal discussion groups will meet during the lunch hour and discuss
a topic of importance. No registration is required. You may come late
or leave early if you have a class. See the calendar
of events for specific topics and times.
Consultant Appointments
Graduate Teaching Consultants
are available for one-on-one consultations regarding all aspects of
the teaching enterprise, from lesson planning to facilitating group
discussion to evaluating student work. Please call the Center for
Teaching and Learning at 966-1289 or email us at gtc@listserv.oit.unc.edu and
