Ed Neal, Ph.D: Biographical
Sketch
Ed Neal began his college
teaching career in 1967 as a professor of Russian history. His interest
in pedagogy ultimately led him to pursue a career as an educational
consultant. In 1978, he created the first faculty development program
at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Currently, as Director
of Faculty Development in the UNC Center for Teaching and Learning,
he is responsible for programs that help faculty members and graduate
students become more effective teachers.
He leads faculty development
workshops and seminars, writes articles and monographs on pedagogical
issues, develops teaching assessment systems, designs program evaluations,
and serves on university committees that deal with teaching, assessment,
and the curriculum. Much of his work focuses on consultations with individual
instructors, helping them solve instructional problems, develop new
teaching approaches, plan courses, design exams and assignments, and
interpret the results of student evaluations and peer reviews. He also
teaches a graduate course in college teaching and is active in regional
and national faculty development organizations.
He is the editor of The
Journal of Faculty Development, serves on the editorial board of
The National Teaching and Learning Forum, and is a guest reviewer
for Innovative Higher Education.
